BHF Research: 2009 winners

Winner of the Student category

“In this image, the heart is represented by a powerful beam of light which punctures the surrounding darkness. Surrounding this are swirling images that clamour for the light and attention of the piercing gaze of the 'heart' “.

This image gives me something to think about. Although the photographer knows his interpretation of the photo i feel people may see it in different ways. And when looking at something especially images i like to be challenged in the way i see them and the actual concept. I see this and see the photos of possible family and friends hung on a wall, the lighting is dark and dull but then a bolt of light is shone in one certain area. To me this shows where his "heart" really lies in the image. This is something to think about in my pictures, weather i want to make it very stated like the image  above with a simple message, or something more to think about?

Winner of the Adult category

“The idea of the image was to set the strength of the colour red against a muted minimal backdrop to draw on themes of tranquillity and solitude. This in turn is linked metaphorically to feelings of isolation when battling personal health issues; the isolation is represented by the swimmer, though the beauty of life is still present.”

The lighting and colours created in this photo are really spectacular. I need to think a lot about what i want to stand out using the colour red. Again the message behind this is very creative, built on top of that is the colour scheme and photography skills. Once i have my idea and concept i can begin to build on how i will make it a great image.

‘Heart-to-heart Over a Cuppa’ by Ottilie Simpson (Aged 18)
“I like to believe it's the 'small' things in life that enrich your heart and senses: a coat of nail varnish to make you feel a little bit more pretty; a heart-to-heart over a cup of tea with a good friend; or a delicious, juicy strawberry. Every day, these simple kind of pleasures capture my heart and make life worth living.”

Heart-to-heart Over a Cuppa by Ottilie Simpson

I really love this idea, Ottilie has made the smaller things in life very important in this photo. Rather than looking and connecting the British Heart Foundation so literally, looking outside the box can create a bigger picture. The way the image is a simple close up of a mug, the black/white and strength of the colour red works really well together. Capturing the steam of the tea so clearly has been done really well, i love the crispness of the image and feel the concept has been executed brilliantly

Runner up of the Student category
